I’ve been in the boardroom throughout my career. I’ve watched as CEOs leveraged their boards for valuable wisdom and decision making. I’ve witnessed, too, the challenges that arise when directors lack relevant knowledge, have competing objectives or receive different information than their CEOs. From my earliest days as a young investment banker helping to drive IPOs and mergers to my later role as an executive search consultant, I’ve been exposed to boards of many stripes--some that worked really well and others that didn’t. What I came to understand is that a board’s ability to add value always comes down to two things: information and alignment.
Over the years, I’ve been asked for countless coffee dates to counsel people about boards. Sometimes it’s a CEO who wants to work more effectively with a board; other times it’s a director who sees their own board as misaligned. Often I hear from accomplished executives who simply want to know “How do I get on a board?” I learn something from every conversation—but one-on-one coffees don’t help enough people. Thinking about my scalability challenge, something important occurred to me: Board access to information doesn't scale either -- but it should! A lack of analysis and insights is what keeps the boardroom unnecessarily mysterious, unapproachable and hard to manage. I realized that while sales, HR, finance and other professionals have SaaS tools and tech platforms, board members have had little beyond expensive consultants with black-box solutions. To help boards thrive, we need to find a better way to share best practices, data, and the relationships that collectively make us stronger performers. This thinking led to Boardspan. I founded the company to create new ways to share information and connect people, freeing up board members to be strategic, proactive and forward thinking. I know from decades of experience that’s not only good for the board, but great for the entire organization. Join us in this board revolution and get the information and alignment your board needs to be successful. Boardspan: We build better boards (even if it means foregoing the coffee). |
